All About Christmas Traditions and Christmas Gifting
Candy Canes
The candy cane is plentiful over the Christmas period. They are given as token
gifts used to decorate Christmas trees and even used to decorate the outside of
houses (fake candy canes of course!)
The Candy Cane itself holds special significance. It is believed that during the
17th Century confectioners created the sticks of white candy in the shape of a
Shepards staff to represent the Shepards who watched over their flocks that
Christmas night. Even the colour is significant with the white staff of the cane
representing Christ’s purity and innocence and the red stripes representing the
blood he shed on the cross and the three red strips of the Holy Trinity.
Noels or Christmas Carols have been sung back as far as the 13th Century.
Originally they were songs of celebration and worship sung by the community at
times of harvest and other celebrations (such as mid-summer and mid-winter) and
eventually these songs began being sung a Christmas. As time moved on carols &
Hymns began to be sung in Church and became specifically associated with
Christmas.
Christmas Carols have even made it to be State anthems in America. O Christmas
Tree O Christmas Trees melody has been used by 4 states Iowa Maryland Michigan
and New Jersey as the basis for their state anthem. The opening line of
Marylands state song is: "Maryland O Maryland!"
Christmas Lights
In the 1900s business started displaying Christmas lights in their windows in
America. At this time electric lights were too expensive for the average
household so they usually used candles until the 1930s. The “first recorded”
use of Christmas lights outdoors was in 1904 in San Diego and New York in 1912.
In the 1960s it became popular to outline your house in Christmas lights
particularly the roof. This custom has only grown stronger in many Western
Countries with some people spending thousands of dollars and many hours if time
to decorate the exterior of their homes with Christmas Lights and motifs. Local
Councils usually decorate the main shopping areas of towns as well to give that
Christmas Feeling.
Many towns have competitions for the best house or Best Street of Christmas
decorations and often run tours of the town as well as a "light up" festival to
help raise money for charity.
