In the 1900’s business started displaying Christmas lights in their windows in America. At this time electric lights were too expensive for the average household so they usually used candles, until the 1930’s. The “first recorded” use of Christmas lights outdoors was in 1904 in San Diego and New York in 1912.
In the 1960’s it became popular to outline your house in Christmas lights, particularly the roof. This custom has only grown stronger in many Western Countries with some people spending thousands of dollars and many hours if time to decorate the exterior of their homes with Christmas Lights and motifs. Local Councils usually decorate the main shopping areas of towns as well to give that Christmas Feeling.
Many towns have competitions for the best house or Best Street of Christmas decorations, and often run tours of the town as well as a “light up” festival to help raise money for charity.
Perhaps we could put photos of house decorated with lights
