One of the best parts of Christmas is Christmas Dinner. It is the time when everyone sits downs and feasts as a family and celebrates Christmas with good food and drink. It is thought that this tradition follows from the pagan mid winter and harvest rituals, where in celebration of these occasions feasts would take place. Around the world different countries and cultures partake in different foods for their Christmas Dinner.

| Australia | Due to the heat it is generally Cold dishes that lavish the Australia Christmas table including Prawns, Ham, Chicken, Turkey, seasonal fruit, cold salads and pavlova. |

| Canada | As with most of the countries in the Northern Hemisphere, at Christmas it is Winter and so Hot meals are generally served. Items like Turkey and stuffing, potatoes, gravy, cranberry sauce, roast vegetables, and for desert plum pudding with custard. Eggnog is a very popular drink during the Christmas season – Eggnog is a milk based punch. |
| Denmark | In Denmark they have their “Christmas Dinner” on Christmas Eve. Their main course is usually a roast Goose Duck or Pork served with potatoes vegetables and gravy. Dessert is a Rice Pudding and Gløgg a specially brewed Christmas Beer is served. |
| Eastern Europe |
As the
pre Christmas period is a time of fasting in many of these
countries, which is only broken on Christmas Day itself. The
Christmas meal is an elaborate and ritualised meal of twelve
meatless dishes. The 12 dishes are meant to represent the 12
months of the year.
To honor deceased relatives a place is set for them at the table as well as dishing out food for them. Traditional food might include Fried Carp, poppy milk, mushrooms, Potato Salad, Christmas Biscuits, dumplings, doughnuts and much more. |
| Germany | Roast Goose, Porridge, Marzipan and Macaroni Salad as well as bread and suckling pig are likely to be found on the Christmas table in Germany. |

| UK & Ireland | The United Kingdom and Ireland have a similar menu to the Canadians with Roast Turkey and vegetables as the main courses. For Desert you are likely to enjoy bread & butter pudding, Christmas pudding or trifle. |
| USA | Americans also enjoy Roast stuffed Turkey, Vegetables including Yams, corn, and salads are a Christmas Favorite. Roast Ham is sometimes served along with the turkey. Desert can come in many forms including Pumpkin Pie, Fruitcake or Mince pies. The Christmas fair will depend on the cultural background of the participants as well. |

Often the day people visit their extended families, also used to rest and recover from the day before. This is the day after Christmas Day and is most commonly known as “boxing day”.
This terminology comes from a number of sources
· from the middle ages when the day after Christmas the Churches would open their ‘almes boxes’ and distribute the money and gifts that had been donated by the public.
· It was the day that employers would give a small gift “box” to their employees
· After the Christmas festivities the feudal lords would gather their serfs and hand out practical gifts. Each family would receive a box of goods.
· The medieval bonus concept- Employees would take a box to work with them the day after Christmas and they would receive special end of year gifts.
Boxing Day is also when a lot of the large retail stores “give to the public” by holding massive Boxing Day sales. .
