Help writing card messages:

We are all touched by beautiful messages that portray one's feelings at a particular time and you don't have to rely on the card companies to provide that creative touch.

Give your card that personal touch with these few tips:

Before you start writing think about the person your writing to and the reason you are sending them the gift and then follow these tips:

If your writing for romance describe how that person makes you feel – focus on details and use lots of descriptive words to paint a picture for the recipient. Use song lyrics, words from a favourite poem or film to capture and convey that feeling.

If you are writing for a parent/grandparent or person who has been significant in your personal development let them know exactly what they have taught you, or the parts of them that have inspired you to become a better person or changed you in some way.

If you are writing to a younger family member or friend tell them what it is that makes them special to you or pass on a life lesson you learnt.

If you are writing for friends make your card message personal to them- remind them of the good times you've had, or the personal jokes that mean nothing to anyone else but everything to those involved. Don't forget to thank them for all the times they have helped you in a troubling time and tell them how they inspire you to do things differently or what quality in them you aspire to have.

When writing for kids make your card messages fun – a nursery rhyme or a poem written especially for them make great messages. Make sure you use language appropriate to the child's age – it is more fun for them to read the card themselves than having an adult explain it to them.

Sympathy cards are often the hardest to write because you know that the person receiving the card is going through a terrible time and nothing you can say or do will make it go away.

However when writing put yourself in their shoes and think about what you would like and wouldn't like to hear. If you knew the deceased a card can be a wonderful tribute to them – what they meant to you, memories of that person, how they affected you. Reminding the recipients of how much that person meant to others as well as to them will assist in the process.

Remember that at times like these the recipient is likely to be getting numerous cards and letters so keep yours short and sweet. The main thing is that the recipient knows you are thinking of them.

Christmas/Easter and other holidays

When writing cards for these festive occasions make your card messages fun and light it is a joyous time and your messages should reflect the mood of the holiday.

Many holidays have religious significance so it is always a good thought to keep that event in mind and use that for your inspiration. Another idea is to use words linked to the particular holiday to create your message- for example “hope you have a hoppy Easter!”

This list is not intended to govern the way you write card messages, merely to give you some creative inspiration if you are stuck- the main thing to remember is that you are not writing a literary masterpiece you are expressing your feelings to another person. If you are true to your feelings your card will reflect and convey that to the recipient, and in the end remember "it's the thought that counts."
